This page aims to support families to in turn support their young people to learn the skills needed to travel independently or with friends.
Independent travel training
Independent travel training programme
Northumberland County Council aspires to support all young people in Northumberland to achieve their potential.
Our independent travel training programme teaches those with additional needs
how to travel independently and safely between home and their school or workplace so that they can take steps toward living a fulfilled and independent life and access more future opportunities.

Who can apply?
-
Young people with additional needs who have an active EHCP and access council commissioned home to school travel
-
Need to have the aspiration and ability to learn to travel independently

What will the programme cover?
The programme will be in two stages:
At stage 1, we will gain an understanding of the student’s needs and requirements, assessing their
ability to travel independently. Stage 1 will be carried out during the school day, both in the
classroom and out in the community.

If the student is successful at stage 1, they will continue to stage 2 of the programme, which will
cover route assessment and accompanied travel.

Stage 2 will be carried out, before, during and after school, out in the community.
